We are deeply curious about the challenges facing Philadelphia’s children and the organizations that serve them. The Lenfest Foundation joins providers in co-creating solutions that meet our children’s needs and prepares them to thrive in the future. 


Grant proposals are developed through a collaborative process between our staff and potential applicants, then reviewed by the Lenfest Board of Directors three times a year. All applications must be submitted by July 1 or January 1 and will be considered for funding throughout the year.


The application process is designed as a way for the foundation to understand your organization and observe your practice, and to determine whether they align with our funding priorities. A typical application goes through the following process:

    Inquiry

    The organization submits an inquiry to the foundation via the form located here. A foundation representative reviews the inquiry for alignment and responds directly to the contact person about next steps. NOTE: E-mail inquiries will not be accepted.

  • 2/6

    Discovery

    The foundation initiates a phone conversation to learn more about the organization, its relevant programming, and its internal strengths and weaknesses.

    Observation

    If the organization and program align with our priority areas, a foundation representative visits, observes current program activities, and determines whether an invitation to submit a proposal will be issued.

    Co-Creation

    If invited to proceed to this stage, the organization is asked to draft an investment proposal and project plan. A foundation representative works directly with the applicant to prepare a final proposal.

    Board Review

    The Lenfest Board of Directors reviews proposals up to four times a year.

    Grant Award

    A decision is communicated within two days of the Board meeting. The Foundation then finalizes a detailed grant agreement that includes performance metrics and a reporting schedule.
